Have you ever wondered how different your life might have been if you’d made one small decision differently?
Maybe you took a different route, went to an event you almost cancelled, or simply sat next to someone you’d never met.
Sometimes the smallest moments can change the direction of our lives.
And I know that from personal experience.
A Brilliant Day with Business Leaders
Last week, I had the great pleasure of delivering my Productivity Breakthrough Masterclass to a fantastic Vistage CEO group led by Chair Stephen Norris.
What a brilliant group! They were full of energy, enthusiasm, and engagement throughout.
We were wonderfully hosted by Martyn Fordham, owner of Asynt Ltd, a fascinating British company that designs and supplies specialist scientific equipment to universities, pharmaceutical companies and research laboratories around the world.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable day.
During the masterclass, I shared the productivity techniques I’ve developed, refined, and used personally over many years.
From starting your workday to managing priorities, protecting time for focused work, and, just as importantly, knowing how to finish your day.
Because productivity isn’t simply about getting more done.
It’s about getting the right things done, taking control of your working day and still having a life outside work.
When Work Takes Over Your Life
And that’s something I’m seeing more and more in my Executive Coaching.
Many of my clients are successful, capable people who are overwhelmed by their workloads.
They work long hours, take work home, and struggle to switch off in the evenings and on weekends.
They’re achieving professionally, but sometimes at a considerable personal cost.
Helping them regain control of their time, thinking, and lives is incredibly rewarding.
But here’s the interesting thing.
Fourteen years ago, none of this was part of my plan.
The Chance Meeting That Changed Everything
When I started my business, I wanted to become a Life Coach. I trained as a coach and counsellor, believing my future lay in helping people individually.
Then something unexpected happened.
At a networking event, I sat next to a gentleman who told me about an organisation called the Academy for Chief Executives, now Vistage.
He explained how experienced speakers delivered masterclasses to groups of CEOs and business leaders.
Something immediately clicked.
The thought of standing in front of successful business leaders, sharing knowledge and helping them perform better was incredibly exciting.
But there was one problem.
I wasn’t ready.
The Long Road to Success
I needed to develop my skills, establish credibility and, perhaps most importantly, build the confidence to believe I belonged in that room.
It didn’t happen overnight.
I faced setbacks, disappointments, and plenty of moments when I questioned whether I’d ever make it.
But I kept going.
Eventually, that chance conversation led to speaking and training opportunities across the UK and internationally.
Today, I deliver two highly rated masterclasses: Mental Resilience and Productivity Breakthrough.
And something else has happened.
Back Where My Dream Began
The coaching I originally dreamed of doing has come back into my life in a big way.
My Executive Coaching has grown enormously, and I absolutely love it.
Each one-hour session takes place on Microsoft Teams, creating a private, confidential space where people feel comfortable talking openly and honestly.
With speaking, I can see the immediate impact of a masterclass.
But with coaching, I get to witness something even more special.
I get to see people change.
Their confidence grows. Their thinking becomes clearer. Their stress reduces. Their productivity improves.
And sometimes their whole outlook on life changes.
That brings me enormous satisfaction.
Was It Chance or Destiny?
I often wonder what direction my life would have taken if I’d sat in a different chair at that networking event.
I never saw that gentleman again.
Yet one conversation changed everything.
Was it chance or destiny?
I’ll probably never know.
Back then, I had no idea where this journey would take me.
Today, I’m living the dream, doing something I absolutely love, and helping people change their lives along the way.
And for that, I’m incredibly grateful.
Three Key Learnings
- Never underestimate a chance encounter. One conversation, one introduction or one unexpected opportunity could change your future.
- Success takes time. Building confidence, credibility and expertise rarely happens overnight. Keep learning, keep improving and keep going.
- True productivity creates freedom. Being productive isn’t about working longer hours. It’s about working smarter so you can enjoy your life outside work.
Three Thoughts for the Day
- What opportunities might you be missing because you’re reluctant to step outside your comfort zone?
- Are you controlling your working day, or is your working day controlling you?
- If you could look back 14 years from now, what would you want to be grateful you started today?
Well, that’s it for this week.
Have a brilliant week ahead and keep believing in yourself.
Warm regards
John
