Arunima Sinha: From Disaster to Conquering Everest

Over the past decade, my speaking and training business has introduced me to some truly fantastic people, some of whom have become lifelong friends. While I’ve mentioned several of them before, today I want to highlight two individuals who hold a particularly special place in my journey.

The first is Noel Johnson, the CEO of Springfield Training. I first met Noel a few years ago when he invited me to deliver three masterclasses on mental resilience for his staff over three months. These sessions were very well received and marked the beginning of a wonderful professional and personal connection.

Next year, Noel has already booked additional sessions in February, March, and April, and he’s also considering my Productivity Breakthrough masterclass. I genuinely enjoy his company—he’s an exceptional person to work with, and I look forward to collaborating more closely and deepening our friendship in the months ahead.

Lake District Estates

Another remarkable person in my life is David Little, the CEO of Lake District Estates, whom I’ll be seeing next week. Our paths first crossed at a Vistage Group meeting chaired by my friend Peter Hills, where I delivered a masterclass. David’s quick wit and infectious humour made an immediate impression, and we connected instantly.

Last year, David invited me to collaborate with his team, delivering masterclasses, coaching staff, and creating video content throughout the year. The partnership was a great success, leading to further collaborations this year.

Next Tuesday, I’ll deliver a masterclass for his leadership team. One of the perks of working with David is the exceptional accommodations available across their stunning parks. I’ll stay at Waterfoot Park in the beautiful Dollywagon Pike Apartment this time—a real treat.

You can’t beat a good curry and great company.

After the session, we will enjoy a delicious curry at one of the finest Indian restaurants I’ve ever experienced. David’s partner, Sam, will join us. Last year, our evening was filled with laughter and great conversation, and I’m confident this year will be no different.

I’ve often wondered why certain people form such unique, meaningful connections. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to meet individuals who have become truly special friends. These relationships feel rare and precious, embodying what life is all about.

There’s something magical about connecting with someone on a deeper level—a feeling that’s hard to describe but unmistakably wonderful. I never take these bonds for granted. Life is fleeting, and these relationships far outweigh any professional success in the grand scheme of things.

I came across this remarkable lady who lost her leg and used this as a powerful motivator to achieve remarkable things.

Arunima Sinha: Conquering Everest

Arunima Sinha was a national-level volleyball player in India who dreamed of serving in the paramilitary forces. However, her life took a tragic turn on April 11, 2011, when she was pushed from a moving train by thieves trying to snatch her bag and chain.

She fell onto the railway tracks, and another train ran over her leg, resulting in its amputation below the knee. While recovering in the hospital, Arunima faced immense physical and emotional pain.

But instead of succumbing to despair, she resolved to climb Mount Everest and prove that disability could not define her limits. She drew inspiration from the legendary mountaineer Bachendri Pal and began rigorous training.

With the support of Pal and the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation, Arunima trained in the Himalayas, learning the skills and endurance needed for high-altitude climbing. She faced numerous challenges, including adjusting her prosthetic leg and building the necessary physical strength. But her determination was unwavering.

On May 21, 2013, Arunima Sinha became the first female amputee to climb Mount Everest. Her achievement was a personal victory and a powerful statement about overcoming adversity. Arunima’s story inspired millions, and she became a symbol of courage and resilience.

After her Everest triumph, Arunima set her sights on conquering the highest peaks on all seven continents. She accomplished this goal in 2019, becoming the world’s first female amputee to do so.

Arunima’s journey is chronicled in her autobiography, Born Again on the Mountain, which details her incredible story of resilience and determination.

Arunima Sinha’s life is a testament to the power of the human spirit. Her journey from a train accident survivor to a world-renowned mountaineer inspires people to push beyond their limits and pursue their dreams, regardless of obstacles.

A disaster catapulted her to achieve amazing things.

What amazes me is that she probably wouldn’t have achieved anything as amazing as she did if she hadn’t lost her leg. This demonstrates that there is always the seed of something positive in every negative situation.

Thoughts for the week.

  1. Have you turned a work relationship into a lasting friendship?
  2. What makes certain professional connections feel so unique?
  3. Have you ever found an opportunity in a setback, like Arunima Sinha?
  4. Adversity can be a springboard for extraordinary achievements.
  5. This week, consider your friendships and how you respond to setbacks.

Well, that’s it for this week. Have a wonderful weekend, and keep believing.

Warm regards

John
