Five Simple Principles That Transform Performance

This week was a special one for me.

I had the privilege of delivering my Mental Resilience Masterclass to a Vistage group led by Nick Bates, widely regarded as the most successful Vistage Chair in the UK.

Nick runs four groups, each filled with experienced, high-performing leaders. So to be invited to work with one of his groups on Wednesday was a real honour.

And what stood out most?

The engagement.

From the very start, the room was alive with conversation, reflection, and openness. These were leaders willing to look at themselves, not just their businesses. And that’s where real growth begins.

One of the highlights of the session was the basketball challenge.

We introduced ball spinning as a metaphor for focus, patience, and learning something new. What made it even better was that several members actually managed to spin the ball. And one moment in particular stood out, two people spinning a ball at the same time.

But beyond the fun, two areas really resonated with the group: gratitude and the five key pillars of mental resilience.

Nick kindly messaged me afterwards to say how much the group enjoyed the session and, more importantly, the value they took from it. That’s always the goal, not just inspiration, but practical tools people can use immediately.

The Five Key Pillars of Mental Resilience

These pillars are simple, but incredibly powerful when applied consistently.

1. Commitment

This is about doing what you say you will do.
It’s making a promise and keeping it.

Not when it’s easy, but especially when it’s difficult.

2. Control

This is emotional control.

Life will always throw challenges at us. Things will go wrong.
The key question is: how do you respond?

Do you react emotionally or respond calmly and logically?

3. Self-Belief

Self-belief is different to confidence.

You can be confident in one area and not in another.

Self-belief runs much deeper.

It’s like a cruise liner. It can handle the storms and still reach its destination.

It’s the reason you keep going, even when things don’t go your way.

4. Focus

Focus is about using your time effectively.

Knowing what matters, what to do next, and what to ignore.

Without focus, even the most talented people drift.

5. Motivation

Motivation comes from your why.

When your reason is strong enough, you will push through the discomfort.

Because anything worthwhile involves some level of pain.

Three Key Learnings

• Simple tools, used consistently, create powerful results. Gratitude and the five pillars are not complicated, but they work when applied daily.

• Your response matters more than the situation. You can’t control everything that happens, but you can always control how you respond.

• Self-belief is your foundation. When things get tough, and they will, self-belief is what keeps you moving forward.

An Inspirational Story: The Power of Commitment

A powerful example of commitment is David Goggins.

His early life was incredibly tough. He struggled with confidence, was overweight, and lacked direction.

At one point, he decided he wanted to change everything and become a Navy SEAL.

But there was a problem.

He needed to lose over 100 lbs in a very short period of time just to qualify.

So what did he do?

He made a decision. A commitment.

Not a wish. Not a hope. A commitment.

Day after day, he pushed himself through pain, discomfort, and doubt. There were no shortcuts and no easy days.

But he kept going.

And that’s the key.

He didn’t stop when it got hard. He kept going because he had made a promise to himself.

That is commitment.

Doing what you said you would do, long after the feeling you made the promise in has gone.

Thoughts for the Week

  1. What promises have you made to yourself that you’re not keeping?
  2. Where do you need to take back control of your emotions?
  3. What is your why, and is it strong enough to keep you going when it gets hard?

Working with groups like this reminds me of something very important.

Even at the highest level, leaders are still learning, still growing, and still investing in themselves.

And that’s exactly why they continue to succeed.

Well, that’s it for this week.

Have a wonderful week ahead, and keep believing.

Warm regards,

John
