He Failed 10,000 Times

I came across this article about Thomas Edison, which made me think about how he processed apparent failure. He didn’t see every failed attempt as a failure, but he saw it as a learning experience and one step closer to success.

This attitude allowed him to continue from apparent failure to apparent failure thousands of times. He wasn’t failing in his mind, but to all around him, he was. He would have given up without this attitude, and many of his inventions would never have seen the light of day.

You can choose how you see most things in life. Some call it ‘Rose tinted glasses’; some call it ‘half glass full’. Whatever you call it doesn’t matter; what does matter is if you choose to be more positive in your outlook, life will work out better in the long run, according to numerous studies.

Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison is an American inventor and entrepreneur born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio, one of seven siblings in a large family. Edison was home-schooled by his mother and developed hearing problems early on in life.

He led an extraordinary life marked by prolific innovation and entrepreneurial success. With limited formal education, Edison’s insatiable curiosity fuelled his journey to become one of the most influential inventors in history.

In 1877, Edison introduced the phonograph, a revolutionary device that could record and play back sound. This breakthrough laid the foundation for the entertainment industry’s transformation.

This changed everything

However, his invention of the practical, long-lasting incandescent light bulb in 1879 catapulted him to international fame. The light bulb illuminated the world and initiated widespread electrification, fundamentally altering daily life.

Beyond the light bulb, Edison played a crucial role in the development of the electrical power distribution system. He established the first power plant in Manhattan in 1882, contributing to the creation of the modern electrical grid.

With over 1,000 patents, Edison’s innovations spanned telegraphy, motion pictures, and the storage battery. His creation of the motion picture camera laid the groundwork for the film industry.

His impact was huge.

Edison’s impact extended to business, co-founding General Electric (GE) and amassing significant wealth. His famous quote, “I have not failed, encapsulates his resilient mindset. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Despite facing failures and setbacks, Edison’s determination and ability to transform ideas into reality defined his career.

Thomas Edison, known as the Wizard of Menlo Park, passed away on October 18, 1931, leaving a legacy that continues to influence the world. His life is an enduring inspiration, emphasising the power of perseverance and creativity in the face of challenges and cementing his status as a symbol of innovation.

He reframed how he viewed apparent failure.

The famous quote attributed to Thomas Edison, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work,” encapsulates his remarkable attitude towards failure. Edison’s ability to persevere through numerous setbacks and failures was a crucial aspect of his success as an inventor and entrepreneur.

Edison viewed each “failure” as a valuable learning experience rather than a reason to give up. His relentless determination and resilience were evident in his willingness to experiment, iterate, and refine his ideas.

Instead of being discouraged by his challenges, Edison saw them as opportunities to gain insights, eliminate what didn’t work, and move closer to the solutions he sought.

A great mindset

This mindset allowed Edison to approach innovation with a unique perspective. He understood that setbacks were inherent in the creative process and embraced them as stepping stones toward success.

His unwavering commitment to overcoming obstacles and learning from failures became a hallmark of his approach to invention. Edison’s ability to maintain motivation in the face of repeated failures is a testament to his resilience and belief in the transformative power of persistence.

His story is an inspirational example for individuals facing challenges, emphasising the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and a positive attitude in pursuing innovation and success.

If I had to choose one essential characteristic of mental resilience, persistence would be it. This is the one I picked from my life that has kept me going after each setback and has helped me bounce back yet again when I lost all my business in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Persistence

Persistence is a fundamental quality that significantly influences personal and professional success:

Goal Achievement: Persistent individuals maintain an unwavering commitment to their objectives, navigating challenges and setbacks with determination. This steadfast approach substantially increases the likelihood of accomplishing goals.

Resilience: The ability to view failure as a temporary setback rather than a defeat characterises the resilience of persistent individuals. Learning from mistakes and adapting strategies contribute to continued progress.

Skill Development: Persistent effort leads to skill development and mastery. Whether in education or career pursuits, dedication to improvement over time enhances competence in various areas.

Confidence Building: Overcoming challenges through persistent effort results in a positive feedback loop, building confidence. Small victories contribute to an increasingly positive self-image and belief in one’s abilities.

Procrastination Prevention: Persistent individuals actively engage with tasks, minimising the tendency to procrastinate. Recognising the importance of consistent effort ensures productivity and steady progress toward goals.

In summary, persistence shapes a resilient, skilled, and confident individual, ready to face challenges and pursue ambitious objectives across different aspects of life.

Thoughts for the week

  1. Positive thinking is an old-fashioned phrase used for centuries but is, in fact, still very relevant today.
  2. A positive mindset will result in higher energy, improved motivation, and better health.
  3. Persistence is a key to overcoming challenges in your life, and a positive mindset improves your ability to be persistent.
  4. This week, work on your level of persistence, keep getting back up when you fall and watch how you start to overcome these challenges and how good this feels.

Well, that’s it for this week. Have a wonderful weekend, and keep believing in yourself.

Warm regards
