As I sit here on Saturday morning writing this blog, I am in my bedroom office overlooking my garden and the sun is shining and I am happy. I never thought that I would ever write these words because for the past 45 years I have always worked from coffee shops.
Every day I would leave the house at around 7.30am even though I was running my own business. I would start at one coffee shop then every couple of hours move to another and I found this to be a great way to stay focused and be really productive.
I would then come home at around 6pm and leave my work in the car so my home would be a place of rest. I wanted to keep my home separated from work.
I had to change quickly
Since the lockdown I have had to change my entire working style very quickly. Change can affect people in different ways, and this was a huge challenge for me. On that first day it was very strange, and I was all over the place. I didn’t feel comfortable being on my own in the house.
I am organised and like to have routines and everything was different, however by having the right mindset just 2 days later I was actually enjoying working from home. I have established routines which work really well, and I am being very productive.
Working from home
Just last week I produced a new programme which I am delivering to companies who have staff working from home. This is a Mental Resilience Mindset Programme which will help staff who are isolated to be more positive, have higher energy and be happier working from home.
I have developed a 10-point plan to work effectively at home based on my experience and this is going to help a lot of people. I really do enjoy working from home and when things go back to the new normal, I will be spending more time working from home.
Reframe your thinking
During this very difficult period it’s more important than ever to find the positives in this unprecedented time. Once you know that it is possible to find positives you will start to find them. Remember – what you think is what you feel so finding positives makes you feel better.
These positive don’t have to be large they can be very simple things which make you feel better about your situation. An example of one of these very small things is TOAST!
When I was working from coffee shops, I would have a couple of slices of brown toast with butter as a little treat to keep me going. Many times, the toast would be underdone or overdone – it was never exactly as I wanted it.
A great outcome
Now that I am working from home my toast is always perfectly done. I am a bit of a stickler for detail and I can benefit from working from home by making perfect toast every single time. I turn the toast a couple of times and the toast is light brown all over and the butter covers every part of the toast for the perfect bite every time!!
I know you may be laughing about this, but I really look forward to making and eating the toast. So, one of the positives to working from home for me is perfect toast. What can you find that is positive about your situation whether you are working from home or not?
Last week I gave details about the Mental Resilience Foundations Workbook and the response was great. Many of you requested this FREE Workbook and you are now working on the exercises detailed in the workbook.

Dave Clarke – Double Guinness World Record Holder
Dave Clarke is a double Guinness World Record Holder for sailing and rowing singlehandedly across the Atlantic and I have been coaching him face to face for many years. He is a successful businessman and last week was the first time he experienced a Zoom coaching session. This is what he said:
“Coaching using Zoom was better than I expected. We had a great session which was in some ways better than a face to face and we’ve booked another session in two weeks.
It was good to sit in my home/office and relax in a comfortable environment. In these challenging times using Zoom for our coaching session was great, it was like John was sat at the end of my desk and we were having a face to face meeting.
Relaxing in your own environment also helped as you are instantly comfortable and perhaps more honest with your thoughts and feelings.
John was really organised, and we ran through the session with good discussions and a follow up action plan.”

Amazing email
Yesterday I received a wonderful email from an Associate Director from a company in Dubai who attended one of my talks 3 weeks ago and they told me how my book had had a huge impact on them and had lifted their spirits while working from home.
This made me think about the availability of my book across the world and currently it is only available in the UK. However, one way to receive a copy of my book anywhere in the world is to download a Kindle version on Amazon.
If you have a Kindle great if not you can download a free Kindle App to your tablet, phone or computer and you just need to use your email and password for Amazon to log in.
This is a link to my Kindle version on Amazon and the download button for the App is here too:
