There’s something I always notice when I walk into a room full of CEOs.
On the outside, they look calm, confident, in control. These are people who make big decisions every day. People others rely on when things get tough.
But here’s what I’ve learned over the years…
They’re human, just like the rest of us.
This week, I had the pleasure of delivering my Mental Resilience Masterclass to a Vistage group in Berkshire, led by Andy Smith. A fantastic group of CEOs who have all made a conscious decision to invest time in themselves.
And that’s not always easy at that level.
Because if we’re honest, CEOs are often the last people to put their hand up and say, “I need support.”
Not because they don’t need it… but because they feel they should have all the answers.
That’s why environments like Vistage are so powerful.
You’ve got a group of leaders coming together, learning from different speakers in the morning, and then, in the afternoon, helping each other solve real business challenges through honest conversations.
No egos. Just support.
And what I loved about this group was how open they were.
They didn’t sit back.
They leaned in.
It Always Comes Back to Mindset
What we focused on throughout the session was something I talk about a lot…
Your mindset drives everything.
Because leadership isn’t tested when things are going well.
It’s tested when the pressure is on, when the stakes are high, and when you’ve got difficult decisions to make.
That’s when your thinking either helps you or works against you.
We talked about how to perform better under pressure, staying calm, clear, and in control when it matters most.
We went through practical ways to reduce stress and avoid burnout using simple techniques such as relaxation, breathing and visualisation.
The sleep technique really landed with them.
And it always does.
Because no matter how successful you are, if you’re not sleeping well, everything becomes harder. Your thinking, your patience, your energy.
We also covered gratitude and reframing.
Two of the quickest ways to change how you feel.
I always say, ” What we think is what we feel.”
Shift your thinking, and you shift your state.
And when your state improves, so does your performance.
Finally, we talked about resilience. That ability to bounce back quickly when things don’t go your way.
Because let’s be honest…
Things don’t always go your way.
Simple Tools That Actually Work
One thing I always emphasise in my sessions is this…
I don’t deal in theory.
Everything I share is simple, practical, and designed to be used straight away.
But there’s a catch.
You have to use it.
There’s no point in hearing something, nodding along, and then going back to doing the same things.
The people who get the most from these sessions are those who apply them.
And this group will.
You can tell.
3 Key Takeaways
1. Your mindset drives your performance
If your thinking isn’t right, it doesn’t matter how good your strategy is.
2. Simple techniques, used consistently, make a huge difference
Breathing, visualisation, gratitude. Small things done daily create big results.
3. You don’t have to do it alone
The best leaders seek support, share ideas, and keep learning.
The Bit That Stood Out Most
The most inspiring part of the day wasn’t just the techniques.
It was the honesty in the room.
Senior leaders being open about the pressures they face. The challenges. The reality of what it’s like at the top.
That takes courage.
And for me, that’s real leadership.
Because when a leader improves their mindset, it doesn’t just help them…
It impacts their whole business.
Thoughts for the Week
- What has gone well this week that I haven’t acknowledged yet?
- Where am I putting unnecessary pressure on myself?
- How can I create just a little more space in my day to think clearly?
Sometimes the biggest change doesn’t come from doing more.
It comes from thinking better.
And when you get that right, everything else starts to fall into place.
Well, that’s it for this week.
Have a wonderful week ahead, and keep believing.
Warm regards
John
