The Mountain Man of India

Dashrath Manjhi, known as the “Mountain Man” of India, was born in the remote and impoverished village of Gehlaur in Bihar. Growing up in a marginalised caste and extreme poverty, he experienced the daily struggles of rural life — especially the lack of access to healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

His village was cut off by a steep mountain ridge, forcing people to travel over 70 kilometres to reach the nearest town, Wazirganj, for basic services.

In 1960, Dashrath’s wife, Falguni Devi, was severely injured and needed urgent medical care. The rough terrain made help unreachable, and she tragically died. Heartbroken, Dashrath vowed that no one else in his village would suffer as she had.

With no training, money, or machinery — just a hammer, chisel, and crowbar — he began carving a road through the mountain. People mocked him, calling him mad.

Yet he worked alone for 22 years, often by candlelight, selling goats to buy tools, and enduring scorching heat and monsoons. His determination never faded.

By 1982, he had completed a road 110 metres long, 9 metres wide, and 7.6 metres deep, reducing the journey from 70 km to just 15 km. His work connected the once-isolated village to hospitals, schools, and markets, transforming thousands of lives.

Eventually, his efforts were recognised. Though he lived much of his life in poverty, the government honoured him, and his story inspired the 2015 film Manjhi — The Mountain Man.

He died in 2007, but the road he carved — and his legacy — live on.

Dashrath Manjhi showed the world that one person, driven by purpose, love, and resilience, can move mountains.’

Wow — this story truly took my breath away.

Dashrath Manjhi, heartbroken by the loss of his wife, channelled his pain into an extraordinary act of service. Rather than be crushed by grief, he devoted his life to ensuring no one else would suffer as she had.

Driven by a purpose so powerful that no obstacle could stop him, he carved a path through a mountain with his bare hands. His selfless determination transformed the lives of his entire village, connecting them to the outside world and opportunity.

It’s a reminder that even the most profound sorrow can be turned into a lasting, life-changing impact.

There are several key lessons we can learn from the life and legacy of Dashrath Manjhi:

Purpose gives strength.
Manjhi’s mission came from grief, but his love for his wife and desire to help others gave him remarkable strength. Deep meaning can drive us to face even the toughest challenges.

Resilience outweighs resources.
With no money, education, or tools, Manjhi achieved the impossible. He proved that determination and consistency can overcome a lack of privilege or support.

Ignore mockery — stay the course.
People mocked him and called him mad. Yet he stayed true to his mission. His story reminds us to follow our values, even when others don’t understand.

One person can spark progress.
Working alone for 22 years, Manjhi showed that significant change can start with a single step — or a single swing of a hammer.

Patience builds a legacy.
It took 22 years to carve the road. In a world of quick fixes, Manjhi reminds us that lasting impact comes from steady, persistent effort.

Greatness comes from humble beginnings.
Manjhi rose from poverty and obscurity through service and grit. Greatness isn’t about where you start but what you choose to do.

Love can transform pain.
His grief didn’t break him — it moved him to act. Even sorrow can lead to something lasting and powerful when channelled with purpose.

Manjhi’s life reminds us: you may not move the mountain, but you can carve a path through it.

Thoughts for the week:

  1. What lesson from Manjhi’s story speaks most to your life right now?
  2. What pain could you turn into purpose?
  3. What mountain are you facing — and how can you begin?
  4. What legacy do you want to build — and are you building it?

Well, that’s it for this week. Have a wonderful weekend and keep believing.

Warm regards

John
