The Power of Everyday Gestures in a Relationship

Thirty years ago, I saw Riverdance for the first time. The music, the rhythm, and the passion of the dancers completely amazed me. I fell in love with the show and have never forgotten that experience.

My wife Julie knows how much I love Riverdance. Nine months ago, without telling me, she secretly booked tickets for us to see the show in Sheffield. There was no birthday, anniversary, or special event; she did it simply because she loves me and wanted to make me happy.

When the night came last week, the show was incredible. But what touched me even more than the dancing was Julie’s thoughtfulness. Her surprise reminded me of something important. It’s not only the big days that matter in a marriage. It’s the small, loving actions we do during the year that make a relationship even stronger.

Here are three things I learned from that night.

1. Love Shows in the Everyday

Big gestures are nice, but it’s the small, regular acts of love that build a strong relationship. Julie’s surprise meant so much because it came from her heart, not from a date on the calendar.

2. Surprises Bring Joy

Life can easily slip into routine. Surprises, big or small, bring fun and energy back into a relationship. It could be planning a day out, cooking a favourite meal, or even leaving a kind note. These little surprises create happy memories.

3. Sharing Experiences Builds Closeness

Seeing Riverdance together wasn’t just about me reliving something I loved. It was about us creating a memory we now share. Shared experiences, no matter how simple, give couples something special to hold onto and remember.

That night in Sheffield was more than just a show. It was a reminder that love is about the things we do every day, not just on birthdays or anniversaries. A marriage grows stronger when we keep showing love in small ways all year round.

Love doesn’t only live in big celebrations. It shines brightest in the small, everyday acts of care. For me, Riverdance wasn’t just an incredible performance; it was a reminder of what makes a marriage last.

A busy week ahead.

This week, I had the pleasure of delivering my Productivity Masterclass to the Vistage group led by Chair Ardian Sharpe. What an outstanding group! Their energy, engagement, and openness made the time fly by, and it was a real privilege to share practical techniques that they found valuable.

Next week, I’ll be delivering three more Masterclasses across the country, and I’m genuinely looking forward to each one. Moments like this remind me why I love what I do. At 71, I still feel full of energy and passion for helping people unlock their potential. And I plan to continue at least until 80 before I even think about slowing down!

I gain enormous satisfaction from working with people and watching them grow, both in confidence and capability. My coaching work is also thriving, and I’m delighted to now be working with a new client in the USA.

One of the joys of online coaching is that it opens the door to supporting individuals worldwide, which truly excites me. I feel very grateful to do work that inspires me every day, and even more grateful to see the lasting impact it has on others.

Thoughts for the week.

  1. When was the last time you did something to surprise your partner?
  2. What small acts of kindness could you add to your week to show love more often?
  3. What experiences can you create and share to build happy memories?
  4. In five years, what small gestures would you like to look back on and remember?

Well, that’s it for this week. Have a wonderful weekend and keep believing.

Warm regards

John
