It has been a great trip to Dubai and I fly back on Monday. The highlight must be spending time with Robin Wells the CEO of Medstar Global Benefits. Robin and I first met around 3 years ago when he attended a talk, which I delivered at a Brits in Business event in Dubai.
He spoke to me after the event and we connected really well. We kept in touch in various ways and one of the main connection points was my weekly blog. Robin signed up and this was a great way to stay connected as well as benefiting from the various messages in each blog.
An invitation to speak
Late last year Robin asked when I was next coming to Dubai as some of his international clients were asking about Mental Resilience and this is how this trip came about. It has been a great experience to be booked to speak to global organisations like Deloitte, UBS Bank, Accor and Arcadis.
He has really helped me
Robin has been hugely successful in Dubai using many of the principles which I deliver in my talks and he has even helped to rewrite my presentation to make if flow much better and to take the audience on a journey.
Today I share an article which I have published before but I have so many new followers that this will connect with many of you.
Never let negative words from the past hold you back in the future
“As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg.
No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at any time, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. ‘Well,’ trainer said, ‘when they are very young and much smaller, we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them.
As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.’
The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.”
What people say has a huge impact
What we are told as children and young people becomes our life story. We create an inner voice which tells us ‘we can’t do this’ or ‘we are stupid’ or ‘don’t show off’ or ‘you will never achieve anything’. And this becomes our reality.
But this belief we have about ourselves isn’t real – we have taken someone’s opinion of ourselves and made it ours. Don’t do it. We all have much more potential than we will ever realise, and my life mission is to release people to find their true potential.
An amazing transformation
My wife Julie has exploded in confidence and ability since I have gently coached her with encouragement and positive affirmation. It is incredible and it shocks me to see how she is blossoming. When she was younger, she was told she was useless and will never amount to anything.
She has now changed her inner voice and her belief system and is discovering talents she never knew she had. She is growing every day and I have the privilege to watch the caterpillar turn into a beautiful butterfly.
I’m 66 years of age and just warming up!
I am blessed to be making a difference to so many people and I want to be doing this well not my 80’s.
Thoughts for the week.
- What was said over your life which was negative?
- Do you have any areas in your life where you lack confidence?
- If you do, the odds are you were fed some negative words over your life?
- This week observe where you lack self-belief and write them down.
- Once written down you can start to work on creating your new story.
Over the coming months I will be sharing how to do this.
Well that’s it for this week have a wonderful weekend and keep Believing.
Warm regards
John
