Keanu Reeves is one of the finest actors in Hollywood, but it is very inspiring to read that his childhood was marred with incredible difficulties, yet he succeeded to an amazing level.
Against all the odds
In 1964, the world welcomed Keanu Reeves, one of the most famous, gifted, kind-hearted and generous actors to have ever graced the Silver Screen. However, Keanu’s life was wrought with failures, most of which were completely out of his control and his hands.
To say that Keanu suffered through a monumentally difficult upbringing would be an understatement.
In fact, nothing about Keanu’s life was straightforward, nor was it common. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, where his mother, who is of English descent from Essex, met his father, an American from Hawaii while working in the country.
At the age of 3 years old, however, his father abandoned the family. Reeves kept in touch with him for the next few years but then didn’t see him again until he was 13 years old. His childhood was spent in multiple locations. Initially, it was in Australia, but then, he was led to Canada.
His mother had married and divorced 4 times and he had been to four separate high schools in a 5-year period. When he was 17 years old, he dropped out of high school and moved to Los Angeles, obtaining a green card through his stepfather, Paul Aaron, a Hollywood director.
In 1998, Reeves married Jennifer Syme with whom he fathered a baby, who unfortunately was stillborn at eight months of age, which led to the disintegration of the couple’s relationship. Tragically, 18 months after the relationship ended, Syme died in a car accident.
Reeves starred in numerous minor roles in films prior to his breakthrough role in River’s Edge, which led to the role in the widely popular film, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
Ultimately, however, it was his role in the 1999 blockbuster movie, The Matrix, that resulted in an unprecedented rise to fame.
It’s not how you start
What I take from this story is one of my favourite phrases ‘It’s not how you start in life which counts it’s how you finish’.
There are so many successful people in the world who had very difficult childhoods, but they didn’t give up and end up on the streets, something inside them kept them pushing forward to achieve their dreams.
I would bet that Keanu had a dream to be a film star one day and that dream kept him going. He most likely daydreamed all day long about one day starring in a movie and this visualisation fuelled his desire to keep going.
There is real power in visualisation and I am currently coaching quite a few clients and all of them are working on a Dream Board of things they want to achieve during their lifetime. These are personal and business dreams which excite them and give them incredible motivation to succeed.
These Dream Boards contain images of the amazing things they want to achieve some are small and some are big but all of them mean something to each person. As they visualise these dreams, they create a vivid image of these goals and dreams, and this increases their motivation to succeed.
I believe that everyone who has achieved anything significant in their lives has visualised this achievement many times before they finally achieve them. Some people call it daydreaming but whatever we call it this does have an impact on their ability to bring these into reality. This fuels their motivation to get back up when they fail.
Your subconscious mind can’t differentiate between real and imagined events. So, when you visualise something in great detail with feelings, your mind believes that you have already achieved these dreams and you feel the effect of this. As you visualise you will experience the actual feelings of realising these dreams and this again fuels your motivation.
The Benefits of a Dream Board
A dream board, also known as a vision board, is a visual representation of your goals, aspirations, and dreams. It typically consists of images, quotes, and other visual elements that represent the things you want to achieve or manifest in your life. Creating and using a dream board can offer several benefits:
Clarity and Focus: Creating a dream board requires you to clarify your goals and desires. As you select images and quotes that resonate with your aspirations, you gain a clearer understanding of what you truly want to achieve. This clarity helps you focus your efforts and resources on what truly matters to you.
Visualization: Visualization is a powerful technique used by athletes, performers, and successful individuals to mentally rehearse their goals. A dream board serves as a daily visual reminder of your aspirations, helping you visualize the outcomes you desire. This can stimulate your subconscious mind and increase your motivation to work towards those goals.
Motivation: Seeing your dreams and goals depicted on a dream board can be incredibly motivating. When you’re faced with challenges or obstacles, looking at your dream board can remind you of your purpose and inspire you to stay committed to your objectives.
Positive Thinking: A dream board emphasizes positive thoughts and outcomes. By focusing on what you want to achieve rather than what you want to avoid, you cultivate a more positive mindset. Positive thinking can lead to increased self-confidence and resilience in the face of setbacks.
Ultimately, the benefits of having a dream board stem from the psychological and motivational impact it can have on your mindset and actions. It’s important to remember that while a dream board can be a valuable tool, achieving your goals also requires dedication, planning, and consistent action.
Thoughts for the week:
- Do you have dreams?
- Do you have things you want to achieve before you die?
- This week think about your life, where you are and where you would like to be.
- If you want to achieve more in life, then I suggest you create a dream board with some things you would like to achieve and then visualise these one by one.
- If you do this consistently you will be amazed at what appears in your life – I know as my life has been transformed beyond belief as I have consistently visualised my future dreams.
Warm regards
